“I want to keep my heart open , but unfortunately” (2023)
back
this piece explores and interrogates the aestheticization of female suffering under patriarchy. Specifically, the dissociative process through which this aestheticization occurs. I collect pieces of my diary, trash and various other objects. These objects function as containers of memory. Haunted, in a sense.
The piece ended up accidentrally having the appearance of a voodoo shrine, which would be in line with my cultural background. Central to Voodoo/Vodoun is the importance of possession as ritual. Trauma fragments the mind so that external becomes a container, whether through objects or experiences of the ecstatic or the paranormal.
